Summer is officially here. How’s your staffing coming along?
If you haven’t taken a look at your staffing plan since January, now is a great time to review it. A quick mid-year review can help you ensure that your company is on track to find the people it needs as it achieves each of its upcoming goals and continues to grow.
- Reread your plan. Start by rereading your 2016 staffing plan and objectives. Mark both the places your company is meeting or exceeding its goals and the places it is falling short. How likely are the gaps to impact your plans for the rest of the year? Identify possible challenges so you can start making plans to overcome them.
- Take a second look at your current staff. If your plan has gaps, or if you have a position coming up that will need to be filled, take a look at your current staff first. Does anyone have a skill set that isn’t being used? Has any of your staff expressed a desire to learn more about a particular position or to “grow” into a new area of work? If so, consider investing time and energy into developing your current people rather than rushing out to hire someone new.
- Consider what’s changed. There may be some places on your staffing plan where your company has fallen short, but don’t affect your trajectory toward success at all. Why not? What changed? And how did that change create new problems that your staffing plan may not currently foresee? When you evaluate change, you can better anticipate your future needs.
- Touch base with your recruiter. Giving your staffing partner a quick call mid-year is another great way to ensure that your staffing plan is on track. If you need to update job postings or make a big change in your plans, now is the time to do it. If not, calling simply to connect can help you and your recruiter ensure you finish 2016 strong.
